Bapi Bari Jaa is a romantic comedy Bollywood movie directed by Ashwini Chaudhary. The film stars Govinda and Kajol as the protagonists, with Vivek Mushran, Prem Chopra and Shakti Kapoor playing supporting roles.The movie was a moderate box office success and a financial disappointment, unable to touch the heights of other comedies from that era such as "Kaun Banega Crorepati?" or "Dear Zindagi" In the Hindi song bapi bari jaa from this movie, Govinda ‘s voice has been dubbed by Dilip Sen for some unknown reason. The title song is sung by Hariharan. The story of the movie revolves around a Punjabi girl (Kajol) and a Gujarati boy (Govinda), who are brought together by their love for music.

The music of this movie was composed by Anand Raj Anand. The album contains 6 tracks, 2 Hindi and 4 Bengali. The first track of this album, "Bapi Bari Jaa" was sung by Hariharan and Udit Narayan. The second track was sung by Alka Yagnik and A.R.Rehman. The remaining 4 tracks are Bengali songs. The music of the Bengali songs were composed by Babul Bose, who is also the lyricist for the Bengali songs. The movie was a moderate box office success and a financial disappointment, unable to touch the heights of other comedies from that era such as "Kaun Banega Crorepati?" or "Dear Zindagi". The music of the movie was also received negatively. However, Raveena Tandon who got a lot of praise for her role in the movie said that she appeared in the movie because she had a "happy" smile and it suited her image and thus, made her film career successful (notably, all of her subsequent films and TV shows were successful). The original version does not include Hariharan's singing in the title song. The song was sung by Alka Yagnik and Shreya Ghoshal, but was released with Hariharan's singing after he sang it at a hospital (he came to know only when the video went viral on YouTube). The movie was later remade into Bengali as "Bapi Bari Jaa" (2017). The film is inspired by the 2002 Kannada movie "Preethse". It stars Shastri Athreya and Rachita Ram, where the latter plays a Gujarati girl. The story is about a young man who learns guitar because of his passion for music and his love for a Gujarati girl.
A sequel titled "Humshakals" was released in 2014, directed by Sajid Khan and produced by Vashu Bhagnani.
